Tesla Sells 225 Model Y SUVs in India in 2025, Signaling Growing Demand for Premium Electric Vehicles Despite High Prices

Tesla has officially crossed an important milestone in India. According to data released by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA), the American EV giant retailed 225 units of the Tesla Model Y in calendar year 2025. Moreover, this achievement came in Tesla’s very first year of official retail operations in the country.

While Tesla opened its maiden showroom only in July 2025, the brand still managed steady month-on-month traction. Additionally, retail data shows 64 units sold in September, followed by 40 units in October. Meanwhile, demand picked up again in November with 48 units, before peaking at 73 units in December. Consequently, Tesla ended the year on a strong and confident note.

Tesla Experience Centres and Charging Network in India

At present, Tesla operates experience centres in Gurugram, Mumbai, and Delhi. Moreover, these locations serve as both display hubs and customer touchpoints for prospective buyers.

In addition, Tesla has already installed at least 12 Superchargers and 10 destination chargers across these cities. Therefore, early adopters benefit from a reasonably reliable charging ecosystem, especially within major metro regions. However, wider expansion will remain critical if Tesla plans to scale volumes beyond niche luxury buyers.

Indian Electric Car Market Context

Although Tesla’s sales numbers may appear modest, they look more impressive when placed in context. The Indian electric passenger vehicle market is still in a nascent phase. In CY2025, total EV car sales stood at 1,76,817 units, marking a sharp 77.04% growth over CY2024.

Consequently, EVs now account for 4% of overall passenger vehicle sales, up from 2.4% the previous year. Therefore, Tesla’s entry coincides with a rapidly maturing market, even though adoption remains concentrated in urban pockets.

Tesla Model Y India Powertrain and Variants

In India, Tesla currently offers only one model—the Tesla Model Y. Moreover, the electric SUV arrives as a completely built unit (CBU) and is available exclusively with a rear-wheel-drive (RWD) configuration.

Tesla sells the Model Y in two trims. The Standard RWD variant is priced at Rs 59.89 lakh (ex-showroom), while the Long Range RWD variant costs Rs 67.89 lakh (ex-showroom). However, these prices remain significantly higher than global markets due to India’s steep import duties on fully built vehicles.

Tesla Model Y Performance and Range

Despite its premium pricing, the Tesla Model Y delivers strong performance. The standard RWD version offers a claimed range of up to 500km on a full charge. Meanwhile, the Long Range variant extends that figure to an impressive 622km.

Acceleration also feels brisk. The standard Model Y completes the 0–100kmph sprint in 5.9 seconds, while the Long Range version does it slightly quicker in 5.6 seconds. Additionally, both variants share a top speed of 201kmph.

Fast-charging capability further strengthens usability. With DC fast charging, the standard variant can recover around 238km of range in just 15 minutes. On the other hand, the Long Range version can add approximately 267km in the same time.

Tesla Model Y Design and Exterior Styling

Visually, the Model Y stays true to Tesla’s minimalist design language. Moreover, its aerodynamic shape, smooth surfaces, and sharp edges give it a clean yet futuristic presence.

Full LED lighting with distinctive front and rear light bars enhances road presence. Additionally, Tesla equips the SUV with eight exterior cameras, which support its advanced driver-assistance systems and improve all-round visibility.

Interior, Comfort, and Technology

Inside, the Tesla Model Y focuses on simplicity paired with premium execution. A large 15.4-inch touchscreen dominates the dashboard and controls nearly all vehicle functions. Meanwhile, rear passengers benefit from an additional 8-inch display for infotainment and climate adjustments.

Moreover, the cabin uses aluminium trim and high-quality materials throughout. The front seats offer electrical adjustment and ventilation, while the rear seats support power folding, heating, and two-way adjustment. Ambient lighting across the doors and footwells further elevates the premium feel.

Audio duties are handled by a nine-speaker sound system. Additionally, Tesla has improved cabin refinement using laminated glass for the roof and windows, along with a revised suspension setup to reduce road noise.

Colours, Customisation, and Final Thoughts

The Tesla Model Y is available in six exterior colours. Stealth Grey comes as standard, while other shades cost up to Rs 1.85 lakh extra.

Ultimately, Tesla’s first full year in India proves that there is demand for its products, even at premium prices. Moreover, as charging infrastructure expands and localisation discussions progress, Tesla’s role in India’s EV journey could grow far beyond these early numbers.
